Mom has decided to take Ben, his brother, and his best friend Nate on a camping trip. Since their father’s death 2 years ago, Mom has tried to fill Dad’s shoes by doing things that he would’ve done with the boys – like tent camping and exploring new areas.
They set out for a 2-week trip to the Grand Canyon. However, early into the trip, problems develop, including poison ivy, a noisy campground, getting lost, and car trouble. But the worst challenge occurs when they are camping alone in an isolated campground in western Kansas. A huge storm arrives in the middle of the night, racking havoc. Ben is amazed at Mom’s courage and capability as she leads them to safety.
The next morning in a warm and dry motel, she compares dealing with the storm to dealing with Dad’s death.
